Mass functions and bias of dark matter halos

چکیده
Aims. We revisit the study of the mass functions and the bias of dark matter halos. Methods. Focusing on the limit of rare massive halos, we point out that exact analytical results can be obtained for the large-mass tail of the halo mass function. This is most easily seen from a steepest-descent approach, that becomes asymptotically exact for rare events. We also revisit the traditional derivation of the bias of massive halos, associated with overdense regions in the primordial density field. Results. We check that the theoretical large-mass cutoff agrees with the mass functions measured in numerical simulations. For halos defined by a nonlinear threshold δ = 200 this corresponds to using a linear threshold δL ≃ 1.59 instead of the traditional value ≃ 1.686. We also provide a fitting formula that matches simulations over all mass scales and obeys the exact large-mass tail. Next, paying attention to the Lagrangian-Eulerian mapping (i.e. corrections associated with the motions of halos), we improve the standard analytical formula for the bias of massive halos. We check that our prediction, which contains no free parameter, agrees reasonably well with numerical simulations. In particular, it recovers the steepening of the dependence on scale of the bias that is observed at higher redshifts, which published fitting formulae did not capture. This behavior mostly arises from nonlinear biasing.

The Large Scale Bias of Dark Matter Halos: Numerical Calibration and Model Tests
We measure the clustering of dark matter halos in a large set of collisionless cosmological simulations of the flat ΛCDM cosmology. Halos are identified using the spherical overdensity algorithm, which finds the mass around isolated peaks in the density field such that the mean density is ∆ times the background. We calibrate fitting functions for the large scale bias that are adaptable to any v...
متن کاملLarge scale bias and stochasticity of halos and dark matter
On large scales galaxies and their halos are usually assumed to trace the dark matter with a constant bias and dark matter is assumed to trace the linear density field. We test these assumption using several large N-body simulations with 384−768 particles and box sizes of 96−1152hMpc, which can both resolve the small galactic size halos and sample the large scale fluctuations. We explore the av...

We use a high resolution N -body simulation to study the velocity bias of dark matter halos, the difference in the velocity fields of dark matter and halos, in a flat low-density ΛCDM model. The high force, 2hkpc, and mass, 10hM⊙, resolution allows dark matter halos to survive in very dense environments of groups and clusters making it possible to use halos as galaxy tracers. We find that the v...
متن کاملProperties of Cold Dark Matter Halos at z > 6
We compute the properties of dark matter halos with mass 10 − 10M⊙ at redshift z = 6 − 11 in the standard cold dark matter cosmological model, utilizing a very high resolution N-body simulation. We find that dark matter halos in these mass and redshift ranges are significantly biased over matter with a bias factor in the range 2− 6. The dark matter halo mass function displays a slope of 2.05±0....
متن کاملOn Halo Formation Times and Assembly Bias
In this paper we use the “Millennium Simulation” to re-examine the mass assembly history of dark matter halos and the age dependence of halo clustering. We use eight different definitions of halo formation times to characterize the different aspects of the assembly history of a dark matter halo. We find that these formation times have different dependence on halo mass. While some formation time...
